Black Persian or Longhair

Black PErsian or Longhair

Although one of the oldest of the longhair breeds, the Black Persian has never been common. In fact, it has declined in popularity in recent years. A well-groomed, healthy Black Persian is one of the most striking of cats, but it is difficult to keep in prime condition. For this reason Black Persians are never shown in great numbers. If the cats are allowed outdoors, for example, their coats quickly acquire a yellowish or rusty cast. They must be kept indoors and their coats groomed regularly. Black Persians are not favorites of breeders because litters frequently contain variations in color rather than all blacks. Even all-black kittens generally start with brownish or rusty coats that do not turn fully black until the cat is more than a year old. Any traces of white will disqualify a show cat.

Why these beautiful cats are not more popular as pets is not easily explained. Black cats are traditionally symbols of bad luck, but such superstitions are unlikely to impress-or upset-cat fanciers. Whatever their current standing, longhaired blacks, with their large orange-yellow eyes and solemn stares can be most disarming, and no one can deny that a Black Persian in show condition is one of the most eye-catching of all the breeds of cat.
